Lexus . How to Replace a Fuel Filter on a 1988 Subaru 4 Wheel DriveReplacing the fuel filter on a 1988 Subaru 4 wheel drive vehicle should be done as part of the vehicle's regularly scheduled maintenance. The fuel filter contains a metal screen that filters out dirt particles that would otherwise clog the fine passages in your Subaru's injection system. If these screens clog up with too much filtered matter, it slows or even cuts fuel delivery to the injectors. Replacing a fuel filter that has been neglected can also provide a boost to fuel economy. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Flat-blade screwdriver Wrench Phillips screwdriverRelieving the Fuel Pressure Step by Step : 1 Separate the fuel pump electrical harness from the pump body. Pry the retaining clip away from the connector, using a flat-blade screwdriver and then pull the harness off with your hand. 2 Start the engine and run it until the engine stalls out due to lack of fuel. 3 Turn the engine over for an additional five to seven seconds. 4 Loosen the retaining bolt that secures the ground cable to the negative battery post, using a wrench. Then pull the cable off the battery post. 5 Press the fuel pump wiring harness onto the connector on the pump with your hand. Replacing the Fuel Filter Step by Step : 1 Locate the fuel filter. It will be bolted to the inside of the fender on the left side of the engine bay. 2 Loosen the hose clamps that secure the fuel hoses to the filter, using a Phillips screwdriver and then pull the hoses off the filter. 3 Loosen the screw that secures the filter-mounting bracket to the filter, using a Phillips screwdriver. Then pull the filter upward out of the bracket and remove it from the vehicle. 4 Slide the new filter into the mounting bracket. Use a Phillips screwdriver to tighten the retaining screw. 5 Slide the fuel inlet and outlet hoses onto the ports on the new filter. Tighten the hose clamps using a Phillips screwdriver. 6 Push the ground cable onto the negative battery post with your hand. Tighten the retaining bolt using a wrench. 7 Run the engine and visually inspect for leaks. Tips & Warnings While the filter is removed, check the condition of the fuel lines and replace them if they are cracked or brittle. Gasoline is highly flammable and its vapors are toxic. Do not smoke or allow others around you to smoke. Be aware of any sources of spark or heat, such as space heaters or drop lights. Work in a well ventilated area.
Lexus . How to Replace the Fuel Filter in a 1985 Buick CenturyThe 1985 Buick Century uses an in-line fuel filter that is situated along the fuel line. The fuel pump is located in the gas tank and has a strainer built in to help keep large debris from clogging the fuel pump. When the smaller debris and sediments get past the strainer and into the pump, the fuel filter will isolate the smaller debris, keeping it from entering the engine. Failure to keep debris out of the engine will cause premature engine failure. Changing out the filter will also increase your gas mileage and engine performance. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Socket wrench Socket set New fuel filter Drain panSuggest EditsItem AddWhy is it necessary?Done Step by Step : 1 Crawl under the car behind the driver-side rear wheel well. The filter is located behind the wheel well. You can also trace the fuel lines from the fuel tank and they will lead to the fuel filter. 2 Disconnect the inlet line from the filter by pulling the tab on the quick-disconnect and pulling the fuel line off the filter. Have a small drain pan standing by to catch any excess fuel. 3 Disconnect the outlet line from the fuel filter by pulling the quick-disconnect tab up with your fingers and pulling the line off the filter. 4 Loosen the mounting bracket until the filter is freed. Slide the filter out from the bracket. 5 Position the new filter to the bracket and tighten the bolt with the socket wrench. This will secure the filter. 6 Push the inlet line onto the filter. Push it on until it clicks in place. 7 Push the outlet line onto the filter. Push it on the tube until it locks in place. You will hear it click when it locks. 8 Start the car and allow it to run for five minutes. Watch for any leaks. Tips & Warnings Allowing the car to sit for a few hours before you begin will relieve the fuel pressure. Use extreme caution when working around gasoline. Gasoline is toxic and highly flammable. *^ vour car has an e lectronic ignition system, the only work you can do is to replace the distributor cap and rotor if they become damaged. However, even if you have a distributorless system, don't forget to read and change your spark plugs and check that your cables and connections haven't become corroded or detached. I'd do so at least twice a year, or whenever your vehicle stops running smoothly or your fuel consumption suddenly increases. (V\ (T\ If you aren't sure whether your vehicle has one of the older non-electronic distributors that must be manually serviced, note that older distributors have one thin wire on the side, whereas the electronic ones have two wires or more. If you're still not certain, check your owner's manual or service manual, or call the service department at a dealership that represents your car's manufacturer. Part'"• Keeping Your Car in Good Condition, System by System If you have a distributor that does need servicing, check the items in the section called "What You Need to Do the Work in This Chapter," paying special attention to the parts and tools preceded by the ® symbol. Get to the scene of the action The distributor gets voltage from the ignition coil and distributes it to each spark plug in turn. To accomplish this, the distributor contains a set of points, a rotor, and a condenser. Servicing your distributor involves cleaning and checking these parts and replacing them if necessary. Of course, to get to the scene of the action, you have to remove some stuff that's in the way. But 530

(V\ (T\ Although you can jump to any of the following sections to get specific information, I recommend that you read Chapter 6 before going any further. It will help you find your distributor and familiarize you with what each part looks like and does. Then return here and work your way through the rest of the sections in succession, using the ® and CD symbols to identify work that you can do on your particular system. If you go step by step, you can do everything you need to in the most effi cient order, thereby increasing the chances of your vehicle starting the first time you try it after the work is done. Remote your distributor cap (T) (T\ The distributor cap is the first thing to go. To remove it, follow these steps: 1. Find your distributor. Lexus . Ford F250 Super Cab. * If you're still not sure where to find it, Chapter 6 provides a description of the distributor — where it is, what it does, and what it contains. 2. Use a long-handled screwdriver to loosen the distributor cap. Most caps are held in place by either screws (see Figure 12-13) or clips (see Figure 12-14). 3. Now that your distributor cap is free, remove it without removing any of the wires that are attached to the cap. Place it to one side and take a look inside your distributor (see Figure 12-15). Does the stuff in there look like the replacement parts you bought? Look at the structure of the rotor (and the points and condenser, when you get to them). They should be similar, although some parts may be made of plastic instead of metal. If they look different, you've got the wrong parts. Go back to the auto parts store and start over.
